Teachers’ Welfare Our Priority – Amosun

As teachers in Ogun State join their counterparts from other parts of the world to celebrate this year’s World Teachers’ Day, the State government has assured that their welfare would always be given due attention to enable them  perform their duties effectively.

The State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun gave the assurance in his address at the World Teachers’ Day, with the theme ” Right to Education Means Right to Quality Teachers’’, held at the Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, saying, the enabling environment needed to deliver qualitative education would be made available to them.

Amosun who was represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota, assured that proper attention would be accorded to human capacity development, charging teachers, as stakeholders in the sector to ensure they are adequately prepared in discharging their professional duties.

In her goodwill message, Mrs. Mujota represented by the Permament Secretary, Alhaji Sefiu Rasheed, said teachers’’ success was being determined by the outstanding performance of students, adding that, it takes only a disciplined mind to acquire necessary values, concepts and skills.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Chief Mrs.  Olabosipo Ogunsan, described teachers, particularly those in the public secondary schools, as the tools needed in promoting sustainable development in the education sector.

She said the government, under the leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun had remained committed to education, especially the welfare of its teachers, saying, large percentage of the State annual budget always go into the sector.

Ogunsan, who appreciated teachers for being key players in transmitting values and morals to children, enjoined them to work harder to improve on the standard of education in the State, saying, by doing this, they would be justifying the huge investment of government on education.

According to her, “The essence of World Teacher’s Day is to show appreciation to our teachers. Teachers are very key in the education sector, without them, the society cannot go far in the training of our children. Government is equally not unaware of the need to develop and empower the teachers and that is why it’s not relenting in training and retraining teachers and the entire workforce’’.

‘’Education remains the bedrock of the nation, teachers play key role in transforming the lives of our children. We’ll continue to provide conducive environment that will aid the process of teaching and learning’’, she said.

In their separate remarks, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titilope Adebanjo and his counterpart in the Academy Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Comrade Akeem Lasisi, appreciated government for working towards improving education standard in the State, pledging their support at ensuring that affordable and qualitative education programme of the government was successful.
