Ogun Celebrates June 12, Lauds President Buhari For Immortalising Abiola
Ogun State Government has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari led-administration for confirming Late Chief Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola, as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election and conferring on him the highest national award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
The State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, represented by his Deputy, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, gave the commendation while leading members of the State Executive Council, Human Rights Activists, Workers, Students and Trade Unions in a democracy walk, to the Abiola family house in Abeokuta, to commemorate June 12.
Speaking at the Late M.K.O Abiola’s family house, Oke -Ido, Gbagura, Abeokuta, the Governor also commended the Federal government for recognising June 12 as Democracy Day, submitting that the State has been observing the rally since the advent of the present administration in 2011.
He thanked the people that participated in the walk, for their passion to see that June 12 was immortalised, saying that Late Chief M.K.O Abiola remained an Icon that lives in the hearts of the people.
In his welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, revealed that the purpose of the walk, was to give honour to the Icon, saying that the State government has kept faith with the tradition in the last seven years.
The State Head of Service, Mr. Abayomi Sobande, in his goodwill message, maintained that June 12, 1993 election was a watershed in the history of the nation’s democracy, noting that the State workforce identifies with the honour done to the late business mogul.
Also speaking at the occasion, Human Right Activists, Dr. Debo Adeniran, Yinka Odumakin and Dr. Joe Odumakin, applauded the Federal government for the gesture and saluted Ogun State government for its doggedness at keeping faith with June 12.
They unanimously said the only befitting thing to honour the martyr was to entrench free, fair and credible elections and put an end to all mayhems in the country, adding that in addition to the post humour conferment of GCFR, Late Abiola should be listed among past Presidents of Nigeria.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Alhaji Muritala Abiola, expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and Senator Ibikunle Amosun respectively, for the honour done on his late brother and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day in the country, cautioning Nigerians against electing people with questionable characters, rather, credible people that would work towards alleviating sufferings in the country, which late MKO was working towards before his death, should be voted into power.
