Include Road Safety Education In Schools’ Curriculum- Trace

Towards arousing the interest of children in road safety rules and regulations for safer roads, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Corps Commander and Chief Executive, ‘Seni Ogunyemi has re-emphasised the need to incorporate road safety education into schools’ curriculum.

Commander Ogunyemi said this at a maiden road safety awareness colloquium for children in public and private schools in the State, put together by the TRACE Divisional office, Ota, at the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Council secretariat, Ota.

Delivering an address on theme, ‘’Children Weep… Give Us Our Right… Make Tomorrow’s Road Safer for Us’’, the TRACE boss explained that the development would propel the interest of the children in road safety, while challenging parents and guardians, towards safeguarding the sanctity of life, through attitudinal and behavioural change.

‘’It is our belief that this noble process would awaken the consciousness of your parents and guardians towards consideration for the sanctity of life through attitudinal change and behavioural re-modification, for a secured and better life for our children, to make tomorrow’s road safer for them’’,  he said.

The Commander called on the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, to facilitate and fast track the process, adding that nation building and development in road traffic management should be inculcated in the psyche of the children at the early age.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Dele Adeniji appreciate the Corps for organising the seminar, advising parents and other stakeholders to always obey traffic rules and regulations and cooperate with the TRACE officials, to make the roads safer for the children and other users at all times.

Adeniji called on parents and guardians to ensure their children are comfortable by providing them with basic needs, such as food, clothes, shelter, advising them to inculcate religious values in them.

Speaking on the involvement of children in the enlightenment programme, the Divisional TRACE Officer, Ota, Commander Adekunle Ajibade, explained that some children had one way or the other lost their parents to road accidents, through reckless driving, drunkenness, over speeding, lack of maintenance of vehicle, making phone calls while driving, among others, emphasizing that with continuous enlightenment, the rate of accidents in the State would be reduced to the barest minimum.
