A Professor of Power System Engineering at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, Engr. Prof. Isaiah Adejumobi, has called on the Federal Government, researchers, and distribution companies to synergise towards tackling the challenge of electricity distribution in Nigeria.
This according to the Don, would bring about rapid and socio-economic development of the nation.
The Inaugural Lecturer, who is of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, College of Engineering (COLENG), FUNAAB stated this while delivering the University’s 64th Inaugural Lecture entitled “Electricity, Man and Development: The Complexity of the Distribution System Management in a Power Network”, held at the Oluwafemi Balogun Ceremonial Building of the University.
According to him, Nigeria was in a deep energy crisis and there is an urgent need to salvage the situation. He maintained that the government and relevant stakeholders need to give urgent attention to the provision of new and modern equipment as well as the replacement of dilapidated infrastructure in the distribution network. The 64th Inaugural Lecturer called for the establishment of distributed generations at various locations within the urban centre. He argued that this would incorporate the use of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar in stabilising the distribution system in the country.
Prof. Adejumobi maintained that authorities managing the distribution system should show a keen interest in preventive maintenance rather than corrective maintenance. He stressed that the government, relevant stakeholders, and consumers should provide adequate funding for the upgrading, maintenance, and operation of distribution systems in Nigeria, saying that adequate incentives should be provided for both technical and non-technical personnel in the distribution industry.
While Congratulating the erudite scholar, Prof. Adejumobi on his Inaugural lecture which is the 1st Inaugural Lecture from the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, FUNAAB, the Abeokuta Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Engr. Olumayowa Idowu, FNIEEE said Nigeria has the human capacity to have a regular power supply but the major problem had to do with funding and policy. He advised government and relevant stakeholders to seriously look into the recommendations made at the 64th Inaugural Lecture of Prof.Isaiah Adejumobi
