Ogun Orders Traders To Vacate Road Sides, Walkways

Traders, particularly those in Abeokuta metropolis who are fond of displaying their wares on road sides, setbacks and walkways have been ordered to vacate or face sanctions.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, who issued the warning during a monitoring and enforcement across some markets in the State capital, lamented that in spite of government continuous appeals and public sensitization to caution traders to desist from transacting business in unauthorised places some were still adamant.

He noted that government’s zero-tolerance for trading on roadsides remained sacrosanct, adding it would not hesitate to confiscate wares of defaulters or impose stricter sanctions on them.

Oyeleye, who was represented by the Coordinator, State Environmental Sanitation Taskforce (TESMA), Mr. Owolabi Odutan said it was against the law for any trader to carry out business activities by the roadsides, saying that the act would not only endanger their lives but also that of other road users.

‘’Government will no longer tolerate trading by the roadsides and walkways. Apart from the danger it poses to their lives, trading at unauthorized places is against the law. It is unfortunate that despite all our appeal and public sensitization, some traders still engage in the act,’’ he said.

The Commissioner urged traders to move into the marketplaces constructed for them by the State government, saying that compliance would only be in their best interest.

He added that the Ministry of Environment and other related government agencies would continue to maintain sanity on government’s roads and infrastructure across the State.

On his part, the Abeokuta Divisional Commander, TRACE, Mr. Deji Dawoud, whose team took part in the enforcement exercise, said encroachment on roads by traders would no longer be tolerated as it impedes free flow of traffic, adding that his agency would continue to ensure compliance and free flow of traffic across the State.
