OGSG To Install Solar Power At New State Polytechnic

The Ogun State Government has made known its plans to install solar power at the new State Polytechnic, Ipokia towards ensuring an interrupted power supply for the smooth take off of academic activities in the institution.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arch. Olamilekan Adegbite who disclosed this while fielding questions from the officials of the State Ministry of Information and Strategy led by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Kola Fagbohun at his office Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta said the State Government had concluded plans with an Independent Power Provider (IPP) to ensure uninterrupted power supply for the institution and its immediate environs.

Adegbite said one out of the 12 Independent Power Providers earlier pre qualified to provide power infrastructure within the State was selected and saddled with the responsibility of providing solar energy for the institution.

‘’Government had decided to allocate five hectares of land to the IPP out of the 400 hectares allocated for the institution. The IPP needs a large expanse of land, where it will install the solar panels and this is where the energy will be transmitted to the school and its environs. What we want to achieve in all of these is to provide uninterrupted power supply to the school and its immediate environs.’’ Adegbite remarked.

On the take-off of the institution, the Commissioner said, ‘’government is looking optimistically at early next year barring unforeseen circumstances. I think with the crop of contractors selected and adequate funding within eight to ten weeks we should have some buildings ready, where academic and non academic activities can commence. You will recall that the Governor has said that the activities in the school will be in phases such that it will become fully operational in about 4 years’’.

He noted that government would provide structures that would serve as accommodation for academic and non-academic staff, adding that government was ready to partner with individuals and investors willing to provide hostels within and outside the school.

Adegbite added that location of the institution would in no small measure promote socio-economic development of the people in Ogun West Senatorial District of the State.
