President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chief Chris Isiguzo has called on Nigeria journalists to always thrive in protecting the unity and the democratic governance through their objective reportage.
The NUJ President gave the charge in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital on Tuesday when he paid a visit to the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Lawson at her residence.
Isiguzo added that, some despite the antics of the politicians to destabilize the country, journalists should continue to hold them accountable.
He opined that the country will be better, urging journalists not to derail from the tenet of constitutional responsibility of speaking for the voiceless and expose the antics of politicians to destabilize the nascent democracy fought for by the Nigerian Press.
“One thing I will assure you, is as the constitution of Nigeria 1999 as variously amended has given us the mandate to hold government accountable, has saddled us with the responsibility of speaking for the voiceless Nigerians, we want to assure you that we will continue to do same without fear. We are committed and we want to also assure you and our members that let them not give up hopes.

“But I want to tell them, let’s together collectively keep the hope alive. Nigeria will be better, no matter the antics of political despirados, we will remain committed to holding them accountable to speaking for Nigerians and to ensure that nothing happens to this democracy.

“It will not be derailed because we our people paid the price and we cannot stand or sit idly and watch them destroy it. We are determined to protect Nigeria unity and we are committed to protecting democratic governance.”
In her submission, the Iyalode of Yorubaland, Chief Alaba Lawson enjoined Nigerian journalists to share in the vision of the NUJ President at ensuring democracy succeed in Nigeria.
Lawson who is the grand patronness of the union in the state, noted that no successful nation can survive without free and reliable press.
