NSE tasks government to play a central role to tackle the climate crisis.

The federal government has been tasked to play a central role to tackle the climate crisis by putting in place policies that reduce carbon pollution in the country.

The General Secretary, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Ilorin Branch, Engineer Ahmed Lekan-Kazeem gave the charge in a paper presentation at the monthly Technical Season and General Meeting of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, held at the branch Engineering Centre, Tanke, Ilorin.

Speaking on the paper presentation title “a safe Environment: Role & Opportunities for Engineers, Engineer Lekan-Kazeem stressed the need for government to be an integral part of initiative, given the cross-cutting nature of imapact of climate change.

According to him, government should raising awareness on issue of climate change which presently at low level among vulnerable groups like women, children especially rural dwellers.

He urged people to revive the tree planting in the environment and commended state government for endorsed the tree planting initiative to protect and sustain the environment as well as boost the economy.

According to him, as part of the science of climate change the curriculum planners, there is need to ensure that they put in place core knowledge and information about climate change as part of compulsory education for students at all levels.

He said lectures should be financially motivated to carry out researches in various fields of knowledge related to climate change, so that innovative research can contribute to practice solutions.

Speaking on the roles of engineers, Engineer Lekan-Kazeem, who is the Head Maintenance Support Team Kwara South, Kwara State Water Corporation said engineers are playing a great role in Nigeria’s transformation and improving the lives of the citizens.

According to him, engineers can also work with economist and policy analysts to introduce innovative, policies and behavioral change programmes to promote energy conservation and efficiency.

Engineer Lekan-Kazeem also suggested that civil and environmental engineers can team up with experts in climate science, data and communication experts to design infrastructure projects to enhance cities resilience and adaptation to the effects of climate change.
