Gateway Wins First Match In The 2018 NNL Season

Gateway United Football Club of Ogun State has won its first match in the 2018 Nigeria National League season.

            Playing before an appreciable crowd at the MKO Abiola Interational Stadium, Abeokuta, the Akeem Busari tutored side defeated Bayelsa United by 2 goals to 1.

            Gateway hit the ground running early with purposeful play to the delight of the home fans, as the team’s effort yielded result when James Oransaye curled-in a beautiful free kick in the 13th minute to score the first goal.

            On resumption of the second half, the Gateway boys got the upper hand in the 80th minute, when Seyi Okeowo headed in the team’s second goal from close range, a minute after coming in as a substitute.

            A late drama was nonetheless added to the match as the Centre Referee, Cyril Sunday from Ebonyi State awarded a controversial penalty to the visitors, which was converted to end the match 2 -1 in favour of Gateway United.

            Speaking after the match, the Ogun State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Afolabi Afuape praised the boys for the outstanding performance and pledged government continuous support to the team.

            With the win, Gateway now has three points from two matches and will this weekend play J.Atete Football Club away in Otujeremi, near Warri, Delta State
