COVID-19: NYSC Meets NCDC On Post-Lockdown Operations

• Says corps members to complete suspended 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream1 orientation exercise

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has met with the management of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), on strategies for the safe and efficient conduct of its operations ahead of the further lifting of restrictions on socio-economic activities in the country.

It also disclosed that the suspended 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream1 Orientation Course would be completed, when the Scheme receives the go-ahead from the Presidential Task Force (PTF).

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, made the disclosure when he paid a courtesy visit to his NCDC counterpart, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, in Abuja on Tuesday.

He informed that the scheme had suspended the 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course a week into the exercise as a proactive measure to curb the spread of COVID-19 in its Orientation Camps.

Also, he said other operations of the Scheme were scaled down in line with the Federal Government’s restrictions order.

In view of this, he said conscious of the possibility of the further or complete lifting of lockdown, the strategies mapped out by the NYSC Management had taken care of various scenarios, and would be presented to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 through the NCDC for guidance.

In his response, the NCDC DG commended NYSC for its support to the fight against the coronavirus through Corps Member’s activities.

He also commended the fabrication of handwashing machines and production of disinfectants amongst other interventions by corps members.

To this end, he said the proposals presented by the Director-General would be studied and recommendations made to the appropriate authorities.
