Coronavirus: NYSC Shuts Down Orientation Camps

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday shut down all its camps and suspended ongoing orientation course for its corps members nationwide.

It blamed the decision on the outbreak of coronavirus which on Tuesday forced the Federal Government to cancel the National Sports Festival.

The decision was conveyed in a statement from the NYSC management which was posted on its Facebook page Wednesday morning.

The statement reads:

Sequel to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic which led to the cancellation of the National Sports Festival, Management of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme wishes to announce the suspension of the on-going Orientation Course for the 2020 Batch “A” Stream 1 Corps Members.

Therefore, the Corps Members shall be posted to commence their primary assignments forthwith, while they shall be invited back to the Orientation Camps when the situation improves, just like it happened a few years ago when the Nation was confronted by the Ebola virus threat.

Management wishes to state that no Corps Member or Camp Official has contracted the virus,

Thank you.

Some of the corps members who spoke with Tribune Online expressed disappointment at the development noting that redeployment was thereby made difficult.

However, some others expressed joy at the development noting that they had yearned for a return to their various families.

“We have been asked to close down all orientation camps and discharge them to their various place of primary assignment if possible.

“Also, all corps members should get back to their different states pending the time when all dust will be settled over this coronavirus.

“I want to believe it is to avert anything that could endanger the lives of the corps members,” a staff of NYSC had told the corps members at one of the orientation camps.

Swearing-in ceremony for the 2020 Batch A, stream 1 corps members had held in all orientation camps across the country on Thursday, March 12, 2020.

The public relations officer (PRO) for the NYSC in Kwara State, Mr A. Morakinyo, who confirmed the development, however, reiterated that no corps member had contracted the virus.
