Coronavirus: Death toll rises to nine in US

The US death toll from the new coronavirus epidemic rose to nine Tuesday after authorities confirmed that a nursing home patient who died last week was infected with the disease.

Susan Gregg, a spokeswoman for Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, where the patient died, said tests have shown the deceased was infected with the disease.

She said public health officials were identifying care workers who had come in contact with the patient.

“In coordination with Public Health, we have determined that some staff may have been exposed while working in an intensive care unit where the patient had been treated,” Gregg said.

The patient was a resident at the same nursing home where five other residents have died from the virus.

All seven US deaths from COVID-19, as the virus is called, have been in Washington state.

Nationwide, there are more than 100 confirmed cases, including California, Illinois, Florida and Arizona.

Health officials have been scrambling to contain the spread of the virus which first erupted in China and has so far killed more than 3,000 people worldwide.
