APWEN Abeokuta Celebrates 2020 International Day of the Girl Child

…Awards Scholarship to University level for the new born babygirl.

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Abeokuta Chapter has joined the rest of the world to celebrate 2020 International Day of the Girl Child today at Ogun State Hospital, Ijaiye Abeokuta.

In her opening remarks to the nursing mothers at the State Hospital, the Abeokuta Chapter Chairman of APWEN, Engr. Olanike Ogunbona highlighted the importance of educating the girl child. She also advocated for quality education for all the girl child, which would surely have an impact in rapid transformation of the nation.

Contributing, the Chief Medical Director of the Ogun State Hospital, Ijaye, ably represented by Dr. Bunmi Osinaike also advocated for compulsory education for girl child which would enable rapid socio – economic development and growth in the nation. “Education given to the girl child is education to the whole word”, he said. He appreciated APWEN Abeokuta for the innovative idea on promotion of Girls’ empowerment and importance of educating the Girl Child.

Highlight of the event was the APWEN Abeokuta scholarship award given to the new born babygirl of Mrs Adebayo Suliat from Primary education to University level to study any engineering course. The baby girl was born on 11th October 2020, the exact day declared by UN General Assembly to mark the International Day of the Girl Child. Coincidentally, the mother of the babygirl, Mrs Adebayo is an Electrical/Electronic Engineering graduate from Federal Polytechnic Ilaro.

Also in attendance were the Hospital HOD Nursing Dept, Mrs Mosuro and Hospital Chief Admin Officer, Mr. Oyenekan among others.

The International Day of the Girl Child was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011 which focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face, promote girls empowerment and their fulfilment of their human rights.
