Adequate Counsel Panacea For Suicidal Tendencies – Amosun

   

Right and timely counsel has been said to have the ability to avert many suicidal tendencies and other psychological challenges, such as depression in people.

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun stated this at the 2018 International Conference of the Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria and the investiture of the Wife of the Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunso Amosun, as the first National Patron of the Association, held at the June 12, cultural centre, Abeokuta.

The Governor while declaring open the conference commended the roles of counsellors in complementing that of teachers, calling on professional Guidance and Counselors to help identify the strengths and weaknesses of students, so as to nurture them appropriately.

Amosun recommended right policy framework for the advancement of the nation’s educational sector, assuring his government’s support to the Association.

 

In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Amosun appreciated the Association for the honour bestowed on her, with a promise to continue to play her role effectively by impacting positively on the society thereby reducing the vices ravaging the psyche of the society.

She frowned at the moral decadence ravaging the society, calling on all stakeholders across the world to contribute their professional skills, not only to correct but sustain good morals, for a better society.

In her address, the National President of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (APROCON), Professor Mopelola Omoegun, advocated for due recognition for the profession, in order to move Nigeria forward, adding that the Association was in the right position to support government in salvaging the nation from danger.

In their separate remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa and the Chairman of the occasion, Professor Otete Okobiah, noted that Dr. Olufunso Amosun’s professionalism as a counsellor has really shown in her way of life and her work, sayin her talent has impacted positively on the present administration in the state.

The Guest Speaker from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Professor John Carey in a lecture titled “Co-constructing a Policy Advocacy Agenda to Support School Based Counselling in Nigeria’’, expressed the need for people to understand the values of counselling to the society, as well as its different models peculiar to different nations.
