Two Die as Car Rams into Commuters in Ogun

A Toyota Sienna bus on Saturday morning suffered a brake failure and rammed into commuters, killing two persons while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

According to a statement by the spokesperson of Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident occurred on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, on Saturday around 7.30am.

It was learnt that the crash involved three vehicles – a brown Ford with the number plate AAAB 439 XB, a Toyota Sienna, with the number plate KRD 900GV and a yellow tricycle marked AKM 791 VP.

TRACE also added that the accident was caused by a brake failure while the driver was trying to avoid a pothole.

He said, “According to eyewitness accounts, the Toyota Sienna driver was on top speed and in an attempt to avoid a ditch, he lost control and ram into commuters by the roadside waiting to board a bus to their destinations”

“In the process, two persons died; a minor (whose mother survived the accident) and an old man while seven other commuters were injured and one person escaped unhurt”

“The driver of the Toyota Sienna vehicle has been arrested and taken to Itori Divisional Police Station alongside the vehicles involved in the multiple crash.”

He warned drivers against excessive speeding and advised traders to stop displaying their wares by the roadsides.

He also advised commuters to always stand at designated bus stops to board vehicles to their destinations.
