Maintain Good Conduct, Amosun Charges Journalists
Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has charged journalists to always be objective and unbiased in their reportage, as activities leading to next year’s general elections gather momentum.
Governor Amosun who gave the charge while declaring open the 6th Triennial Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, urged them to engage in investigative journalism and not compromise standards, which could jeopardise their profession.
Represented by his Deputy, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, Amosun stressed the need for journalists to be above board by discharging their constitutionally assigned duties without prejudice, adding that, it was in doing this, that the society would see them as true members of the fourth estate of the realm.
“As journalists, you are to serve as mediator between the government and the society, with the task of informing the public about programmes and policies of government. You should maintain peace and ensure that your elections are free and fair in all ramifications”.
“I urge all contestants to play by the rules and accept the outcome of the elections in good faith. Ensure you sustain good governance and interest of your members”, he advised.
The Governor called for unity, as well as professional development of members of the union for the good of the media industry.
In his remark, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Otunba Dayo Adeneye, enjoined journalists to work towards unity of the union and re-strategise on ways of getting information across to the people, as the social media was becoming a veritable tool for everyone in the society.
Earlier, the outgoing National President of the Union, Mr. Abdulwaheed Odusile, said media had contributed in no small measure to the development of democracy in the country, as NUJ has been at the forefront of the fight for rights of every Nigerian.
