Sustainable Physical Environment: COREN Team Engages Ogun Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development

The Engineering Regulation Monitoring (ERM) of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), comprising of Ogun State Technical Committee (OGSTC) and Ogun State Expatriate Monitoring Committee (OGESMC) has sought for the support and collaboration of Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on sustainable Physical Environment.

The Chairman Ogun State Technical Committee of ERM, COREN, Engr. Mutiu O. Odesanya made the request during a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Commissioner of Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPl Olatunji Odunlami, to ensure compliance in the built industry in line with law setting up COREN Odesanya also reiterated that all engineering personnel must be up to date in their practicing licenses.

“COREN over the years feels so concerned about the infrastructural collapse and failure in Nigeria which may be due to poor structural design, poorly skilled workmen, lack of quality materials, and absence of supervision which is also lack of quality management. Therefore, the ERM in Ogun State has step up its activities to ensure safety of lives and property and also ensure value for money on all projects. Hence, the need for support from the Ministry as a critical stakeholder in tackling the issue of quackery in the engineering profession”, Odesanya said.

While responding the Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, TPL Olatunji Odunlami appreciated the COREN ERM Team for their visit, and assured on the commitment of the ministry to uphold the competencies of the different professions in the built industry towards achieving a more sustainable development of the physical environment in Ogun State.

Odunlami noted that the erstwhile Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning Board was unbundled into three specialist policy implementation agencies to drive improved efficiency in creating an environment that engenders wealth creation for the citizens of Ogun State. He emphasised that statutory oversight of the activities of all professionals involved in actual building design construction and management are domiciled in the Ogun State Building Production Management Authority (OGBPMA)

“All we are doing is to ensure that buildings and other structures in Ogun State are better-built, more resilient, fit for purpose, and that buildings do not collapse. “It is common to hear people say that buildings do not collapse on paper, but when a design is faulty especially its structural details, the building has started collapsing right from the paper on which it is designed, which is why collaboration between OGBPMA and the stakeholders under its auspices, are critical to the translation of planning designs into reality,” the Commissioner noted.

The ERM Ogun team had earlier visited the Comptroller of Immigration Services, Ogun State command as part of the sensitisation program. The Ogun ERM Team delegation for the visit includes Engr. Dr. O.A. Apampa, FNSE; Engr. T.S. Sogbaike, FNSE; Engr. M.I. Abbass, FNSE; Engr. Deji Soyemi; Tgst Iyabode Adeola; Engr. Olumayowa Idowu, FNSE and COREN State Officer/OGSTC Secretary, Mrs Hadizat Mohammed.
