The Municipal Council in Muharraq Governorate unanimously approved a proposal to conduct a periodic inspection of safety on homes, buildings and shops. This comes in response to a gas explosion in Arad, which resulted in the demolition of a building, the death of two people, and the injury of six others.
This initiative, led by the Chairman of the Finance, Administrative and Legislative Committee of the Council, Ahmed Al -Muqawi, seeks to ensure that real estate remains in line with the safety regulations for a long time after obtaining their initial delivery to electricity. Currently, safety checks are performed mainly before electricity is delivered to a new property, but the members of the Council say this is not enough.
They are demanding regular inspections to monitor structural changes, unauthorized modifications and expired or missing fire extinguishers, and the availability of surveillance cameras to enhance security. Al -Muqawi stressed the need to carry out continuous inspections.
He said: «There must be regular inspections on buildings, homes and shops from all ministries and government agencies concerned because what happened in the accident of an worrying Arad.”
He added, “We have strict rules for new real estate before connecting electricity, but then violations are abundant.” He also pointed out that many unsafe buildings, especially old buildings, are great risks. He said: “There are hundreds of homes, buildings, and ancient insecurity, which may face the same fate of the Arad incident.”
For his part, Acting Speaker Saleh Bouhaza urged government agencies to intensify their efforts in monitoring buildings and applying regulations, and added that “regular inspections will not only protect the population, but also help companies avoid catastrophic losses.”
He said that this proposal could represent an important step forward in Bahrain’s efforts to enhance fire safety, structural safety, and security in general.
