MAUSTECH Amendment Bill Scales Second Reading.
The Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology Amendment Bill, 2019 has scaled Second reading, with a clarification that the Bill seeks to break the entanglement between Moshood Abiola Polytechnic(MAPOLY) and the University of Science and Technology and allow the Polytechnic continue running its programmes.
This was the summation of views of various lawmakers of the Ogun State House of Assembly, at a Plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, shortly after the motion for the Second reading of the Bill was moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by his Ijebu-North I counterpart, Abiodun Sylvester and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote.
In their separate submissions, members including; Honourables Ademuyiwa Adeyemi, Osho Solomon, Ganiyu Oyedeji and the Deputy Speaker, Oludare Kadiri, said that the Bill was meant to ensure the smooth take-off of the two institutions, adding that it was a timely initiative, which when passed into law by the Assembly and signed by the Governor, would return MAPOLY’s assets, with a view to achieving accreditation for its courses.
They stressed that the amendment would resolve the crisis regarding the two institutions, while devising mode of operation that would sustain academic activities of MAPOLY without letting off the creation of the new university.
Speaker Oluomo, while commending his colleague lawmakers for their robust contributions to the Bill, directed the Bill to the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, for further deliberation and legislative actions.
In another development, the Speaker has enjoined the State Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry, to step up measures at ensuring safety and preservation of various forest reserves across the State, particularly Area J4 and J6, in order to protect wild life in the reserves.
Oluomo gave the advice in his response to a member representing Ijebu East, Olusola Adams, who complained of the invasion of farmlands at Imobi, Ward 10 by elephants, which had led to destruction of farmlands and creating fears amongst residents of the community.
Oluomo enjoined the Ministries to engage their personnel to lead the elephants back to their natural habitat.
Also, the Speaker has assured the State Chapter of the Association of Artisans of patronage towards encouraging vocational and technical practices at local level, with a charge on them to encourage human power and skill acquisition transfer to the upcoming generations.
Oluomo urged them to include other artisans across the State for harmonization towards having an all inclusive association, assuring them of the Prince Dapo Abiodun led-administration’s readiness to partner with them in the infrastructural development of the State.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Association, Anthony Ayodele, appealed for the enactment of a legislation that would encourage and instil technical and vocational education through a standard institution of learning, saying the association would partner with the present administration in the collection of tax and other skills acquisition programmes to promote self sufficiency.
