NIEEE set to install Engr. Michael Akan as the 20th National Chairman

The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer, NIEEE is set to install Engr. Michael Akan, FNIEEE as the 20th National Chairman and new executive committee members of the professional body.

In a release signed by the Chairman, Investiture planning committee, Engr. Isaac Adekanye, FNSE, FNIEEE, the event is billed to take place on Saturday, 19th February, 2022 at the NAF Conference Centre & Suites, Abuja by 10:00am.

The MD/CCE Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, Engr. Bada Akinwumi, FNSE is expected to deliver the investiture lecture at the event which will be Chaired by the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari – Wudil, FNSE, FNIEEE

Also expected at the event are eminent personalities including Minister for Trade, Industry & Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, CON, Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government, Engr. Dr. Ekuwem Emmanuel, FNSE, FNIEEE, Senator Representing Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, Sen. Dr. Chris Ekpenyong, FNSE, FNIEEE, APWEN Founding President, Engr. Joanna Maduka, FNSE, FNIEEE

According to the release, DG/CEO Standard Organisation of Nigeria, Engr. Farouk Salim, EVC/CEO Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Engr. Prof. Umar Danbatta, FNSE, FNIEEE, MD/CEO & Chief Inspector NEMSA, Engr. Aliyu Tukur Tahir, FNSE, Senator Representing kwara North senatorial, Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, Chairman/CEO NER, Engr. Sanusi Garba, FNSE, Executive Vice President, WFEO, Engr. Mustapha B. Shehu, FNSE, GMD Sahara Group, Mr. Kola Adesina, MD PH Refinery, Mr. Ahmed Dikko,  and MD/CEO Pebez Industry Service Company, Chief Peter Ibrahim will be guests of honour at the event.

As part of the ceremony, a prize award ceremony for the National Engineering Science & Technology Essay Competition (NESTEC) has been scheduled as pre – investiture programme on the same day at 10am.

Adekanye however added that Covid-19 protocols will be strictly adhered to at the event while the event will be transmitted live via zoom for other virtual participants.

BRIEF CITATION OF ENGR  MICHAEL AKAN, MNSE, FNIEEE

Engr. Akan Michael MNSE, FNIEEE completed his secondary education at Lutheran Science Secondary School, Ibakachi. He had his tertiary education at the Federal University of Technology – FUT Minna where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1998. He was posted to Oturpko, Benue State where he carried out his one-year service to the fatherland (NYSC).

While still in school in 1993, he took up a casual job with Zhakem Construction which later aided his career path in Instrumentation and Control engineering. He later moved on to work with ABG Communication in Minna in 1993.

After his NYSC, he joined Aicetec in 2000 where he was exposed to oil majors and independent marketers in the construction and maintenance of oil facilities. In 2005 he joined FMC Engineering Limited as a director and he is on the board of  Blue Apple.

In 2012 he obtained an Advanced Certificate from the University of Lagos in Project Management.

Meanwhile, Engr. Akan in 1995 was admitted into the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE as Student Member through the Nigerian Universities Engineering Students’ Association (NUESA)  and became a Graduate Member of NSE in 2001. He joined Electrical Division in 2000 and in 2005 he became a Corporate Member of NSE.

In 2006, he became a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN. He is both NSE and COREN examiner.

Due to his diligence and commitment, was allowed to serve in the NIEEE Lagos Chapter in various capacities and assumed the position of the Chairman of Lagos Chapter between 2013 and 2015. And in 2013, he was co-opted to National Executive Committee to report on NIEEE Chartered status.

While yet completing his tenure as Lagos Chapter Chairman, in 2015 he was called to national service as Assistant National General Secretary and became National General Secretary in 2016/2017. In 2018/2019 he was co-opted again as a National Executive Committee member and was elected as Deputy National Chairman to serve in 2020/21.

Engr Akan Michael has served in several Committees both in NIEEE and NSE and is currently a Member of the Board of Trustees of NIEEE. He has been a member of the Ikeja branch of NSE since 2002.

He was also a member of the Nigerian Contract Monitoring Coalition, which monitored World Bank-sponsored projects in Lagos under the Project Monitoring Unit of PHCN for NSE Headquarters between 2013/2014. He has served as a member of the Codes and Standards Committee, NSE Headquarters in 2014, 2015, and 2016 respectively.

In 2014, he was nominated by the Nigerian Society of Engineers as a member of the Presidential Committee on Electric Meter Implementation of the Ministry of Power and Mines, set up by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR.

Engr. Akan was a member of the National Content Committee of the Nigerian Society of Engineers 2016. He has co-presented technical papers at fora such as International Conference and Exhibition on Power and Telecommunications, ICEPT, and Nigerian Society Engineers AGM.

He is a strong advocate of Engineering Excellence through Engineering Standard and STEM. Since 2012 he has been on the Technical Committees and Work Groups of IEC/SON representing NIEEE.

He is the promoter of the National Engineering Codes and Standards Group (NECSG) and Coordinator IEC-Young Professional Mentorship Program. He was recently nominated to International Electro-Technical Commission- Nigeria National Committee (IEC-NNC).

In 2019, he launched an Integrated National Technology Blueprint (INTB), a private initiative to address some of the challenges facing the nation technologically. Indeed, he is a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) advocate, promoter/convener of the National Engineering Science and Technology Essay Competition (NESTEC) since 2019.

In 2021, Engr Akan Michael was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors (Technical) for the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Minna an Institute under the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) by President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR.

He is a mentor to young professionals. He loves writing and this prompted him to acquire a Professional Certificate in Media and Journalism from the Centre for International Advanced and Professional Studies, CIAPS in 2019.

He is the promoter of www.engineersforum.com.ng blog (a STEM media communication outfit of Blue Apple) and also the author of Career Ego; a book that has since become the roadmap for the professionalization of engineering structure in Nigeria.

Engr Akan Michael is a family man with three children.
