Diya served with loyalty, dignity, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has described the late former Chief of General Staff (CGS), Gen. Oladipo Diya, as a worthy predecessor who served the country loyally and with dignity.

Osinbajo spoke at Diya’s Ikeja residence when he led the Federal Government’s delegation on condolence visit to the deceased’s family.

Diya died on March 26 at 79.

Also in the delegation was the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

According to Osinbajo, the federal government was proud of the late CGS’s legacies, stressing that he served as an effective VP in the regime of Gen. Sani Abacha.

He confirmed that Diya would be given state burial as is the norm and convention.

He said: “As you know, we are here to express the sincere condolences of the President and government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the family of my worthy predecessor in office, Gen. Oladipo Diya, who served as effective Vice President under the regime of Gen. Sani Abacha.

“I think what was important in what we said today is that he served his country loyally and he served with great conviction.

“He put everything on the line for his country not just as a soldier but also as a political leader. He served with forthrightness, integrity and we are extremely proud of him and the legacy he left and all that he was able to achieve in his lifetime. 

 

“We are here to condone with his family and pray that his memory will remain blessed and that God almighty will strengthen the family in this time, and that they also, will even be greater than the late Gen. Oladipo Diya.”

The VP who signed the condolence register after a private meeting with the family, reiterated that Diya was a decent gentleman and an outstanding scholar, leader.

He served the late CGS at all times demonstrated a rare ability to manage men and materials efficiently, adding that he also built trust because he trusted others.

“We will remember him well and celebrate his legacy always. On behalf of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our government I sincerely express sympathies and pray that his memory will always be blessed,”  Osibanjo.
