APWEN Abeokuta Inaugurates OOU Collegiate Chapter

The Abeokuta Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has inaugurated a new Collegiate Chapter at Olabisi Onabanjo University Ibogun, Ogun State on Friday 14th July, 2023.

While inaugurating the Collegiate Chapter, the Chairman APWEN Abeokuta, Engr. Dr. Funmi Alayaki encouraged the girls to be the best in their various engineering programs. She also encouraged them to use their spare time in developing some technical skills such as programming/coding, writing among other needed developmental skills.

In her lecture titled, Breaking Stereotype and building success in your career, the guest Speaker and MD Wurvicat Solar Foundation, Engr. Atinuke Owolabi informed the girls that they can break the stereotype of girls studying engineering courses but not practicing or taking up careers in engineering. They can break the stereotype of having looked for paid jobs by being employers of labour and building a successful career like herself. She encouraged the girls to start looking at developing skills in programming and Artificial Intelligence because that is the current trend. She promised to take some of the girls as interns in her company.

The event also witnessed the inauguration of Miss Akinola Titilayo, a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering as the pioneer President of the collegiate Chapter. Other pioneer executives are Ogunkanmi Esther as Vice President, Ogundimu Adedolapo as General Secretary and Counselor, Adeyemi Odunayo as Assistant General Secretary, Lawal Simbiat as Social Director, Obasa Rashidat as Academic Director, Soremekun Elizabeth as Welfare Director, Ajala Ayokunle as Financial Secretary, Bello Olamitorera as Assistant Welfare Director, Fajemilehin Adedamola as Public Relations Officer and Joshua Mofiyinfoluwa as Treasurer.

Engr. Olanike Adekuesan who is an active member of APWEN and a lecturer at the Olabisi Onabanjo University also encouraged the new collegiate members that engineering is for girls. The event was also attended by the APWEN Abeokuta Past Chairman, Engr. Olanike O. Ogunbona, FNSE, General Secretary APWEN Abeokuta, Engr. Funmi Adegbesan among others.

APWEN was formally inaugurated in 1983 as the catalyst for the advancement of women in the engineering profession towards national and global technological development, with the mission to continuously increase awareness that engineering is a career for girls also, thereby improving the numerical strength of female engineers.

APWEN usually admit female engineering Students who are pursuing a degree program in any field of Engineering as a Student Member of the Association and the Student Chapter in the institution is called Collegiate Chapter.
