Abiodun advocates for Regional Security
The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has said regional security is an important aspect of governance at all levels as government are responsible for the safety and protection of lives and properties of their citizens , hence the the need to ensure improved security networks at all sectors.
The Governor who made this known at the South West Geo-Political Security Summit held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan said the Gateway state had it’s own peculiar challenges as it borders Lagos and other international boundaries like the Republic of Benin, as such, the borders had added to the challenges faced as well as escape routes for criminals going out of Lagos hence the need to work together as no state could do it alone.
Reresented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Abiodun described aerial surveillance as an important security tool for safety, noting that in Ogun state communication challenges within the police would soon be a thing of the past as sophisticated communication systems for the police to relate with one another in emergency cases is in the pipeline.
“In our State, we have challenges of communication within the Police, where the Police have to communicate with each other with an open line, this is one of the initiatives of our administration so as to develop a very sophisticated communication system.
To be able to do this, our government recently launched security trust fund which will help to mobilise funds which can then be used to provide the right security equipment such as vehicles and other apparatus needed for securing lives and properties of the citizens” Abiodun stated.
While thanking the IGP for the Community policing initiative, he urged all to be their brother’s keeper as the initiative is like going back to the Nigeria of old, where people felt saved in their communities because they look out for each other.
Also Speaking at the event, the Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of Nigerian Governor’s Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, represented by his Deputy, Otunba Adebisi Egbeyemi commended the IGP for the initiative of the South West Leaders Summit and called on all stakeholders to join hands together to put an end to the various challenges in the security sector.
Speaking in the same vein, at the event, the Chairman, South West Governor’s Forum, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu who was represented by his Deputy, Mr. Agboola Ajayi said that one of the security challenges faced by their state before they came on board were issues of insecurity, particularly in the riverine area such as kidnapping, sea pirate, but presently the government had disarmed all the youths in the riverine and that has made way for peace, noting that the coastal areas of Ondo, Edo, Delta, Ogun, and Lagos are now safe.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, said the meeting was convened within the context of community policing vision which emphasises citizens engagement in the process of identifying, dissecting and prioritizing threats to communal values, partnering to develop strategies to address the threats, and building trust to undertake actions directed at mitigating them.
Ooni of Ife, the Imperial Majesty Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi charged all stakeholders to take security with more seriousness for the peace and tranquility of the Country, he applauded the efforts of the Governors in coming together in fighting these challenges,
In his submission, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, HRM Oba Aremu Gbadebo poin ted out the need to employ local intelligence gathering as a means of gathering information for security purposes, calling on stakeholders to also collaborate with traditional rulers in ensuring that South West States were free of criminals.
