A number of doctors in Britain have warned of a worrying increase in the number of patients requesting treatment for a condition known as Ozambic feet, which is an unexpected side effect of the use of popular slimming injections such as Ozambik and Wijovi.

Doctors issue new warnings about weight loss injections

According to what was published by the British newspaper Daily Mail, the condition results from rapid fat loss in the feet, which leads to sagging skin and loss of the natural cushioning that protects the joints while walking, so those affected feel pain and difficulty moving.

Doctors confirmed that the phenomenon has been added to the list of aesthetic effects associated with these injections, as the sudden shrinkage of fat leads to changes in the shape of the body and skin.

Dr. Bhavik Shah, a cosmetic specialist at the Dr MediSpa Center, said that over the past year and a half, the center has witnessed a significant increase in the number of cases with this problem, explaining that patients often suffer from pain in the soles of the feet, thinner and drier skin, and more prominent veins, warning that negligence in treatment may lead to severe pain when walking.

Dr. Shah pointed out that the problem is especially common among people who use slimming injections even though their body mass index is lower than the medically recommended, which increases the speed of fat loss and its negative effects. He added that many do not realize the link between the use of these medications and foot problems, or do not mention to the doctor that they are using them.

Therapeutic and cosmetic solutions

According to Dr. Shah, he advised that in simple cosmetic cases, it is recommended to inject collagen stimulants that enhance the elasticity of the skin and restore its healthy appearance. However, in cases accompanied by pain, dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid are used to compensate for the loss of fat and restore the natural cushioning of the foot. The cost of these treatments in Britain ranges from 200 pounds sterling for simple cases, to hundreds. Pounds for complex sessions, and their results usually last for two years depending on the type of filler and the stability of the patient’s weight.

It is estimated that more than half a million patients in the British Health Service (NHS), and about 15 million people in the United States, use weight loss medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy. These injections work by mimicking gut hormones that reduce appetite and slow digestion, leading to a loss of up to 20% of body weight within a few months, but researchers explained that the weight often returns. After stopping treatment, the actual results are less than those shown by clinical trials.

Although these drugs are hailed as a medical breakthrough in the treatment of obesity and diabetes, recent reports reveal a growing list of cosmetic and health side effects, including thinning hair, receding gums, problems with the digestive system, pancreas, and gallbladder, and even rare cases of acute kidney injury.

Doctors conclude by warning that these injections must be used under strict medical supervision, stressing that rapid weight loss may seem desirable, but it may leave long-term effects on health and appearance.
