Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Dinah, Minister of Oil and Environment, Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, affirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to enhancing environmental sustainability, preserving natural resources and achieving sustainable development through national initiatives that aim to develop vegetation cover and increase the green area in order to achieve the goals of the comprehensive development process led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the country, may God protect and preserve him, and the directives of His Royal Highness. Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, may God protect him.
In this context, the Minister appreciated the kindness of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, may God protect him, in launching the “Tree Week” initiative for this year, with the aim of enhancing environmental awareness and supporting the adoption of environmentally friendly practices, and His Highness directed the establishment of an innovation competition in irrigation solutions, with the aim of encouraging creative ideas and solutions that contribute to benefiting from the surplus of treated water, and enhancing the efficiency of its use in agriculture and afforestation.
The Minister of Oil and Environment added that Tree Week and the Irrigation Innovation Competition are an important tributary to enhancing environmental awareness efforts and consolidating the culture of community participation in protecting the environment and developing vegetation, noting that the two initiatives reflect the Kingdom of Bahrain’s firm keenness to establish a culture of environmental sustainability and promote the principles of sustainable development.
He pointed out that the Kingdom of Bahrain is moving steadily towards achieving its ambitious environmental goals, most notably doubling the number of trees to 3.6 million trees by 2035, and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060, in line with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), by continuing efforts in a team spirit to achieve the goals of the Tree Week initiative and expanding the afforestation plan through the implementation of programs. And practical initiatives that contribute to protecting the environment and developing vegetation, thus enhancing the position of the Kingdom of Bahrain as a leading model in achieving a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability.
