She met Dr. Rania Al-Mashat Minister of Planning Economic Development and International Cooperation, Jessica Roswal, European Union Commissioner for the Environment, Water Sector Resilience and Competitive Circular Economy, in the presence of Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, Egyptian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union and NATO, during her participation in the second edition of the Global Gateway Forum, in the Belgian capital, Brussels.
Al-Mashat discusses with the European Union the mechanism for adjusting carbon limits and supporting green industries in Egypt
The meeting witnessed an extensive discussion between the two sides about the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the efforts made by the government to enhance the competitiveness of Egyptian exports in order to adapt to that mechanism, enhance energy efficiency in the industrial sector, and advance the green transformation.
During the meeting, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat stressed the close cooperation with the European Union as one of the main development partners, as the economic relations between Egypt and the European Union extend for decades.
She pointed out that the national narrative for economic development aims to implement an economic model that focuses on productive sectors, and at the same time includes the policies that the state is working to implement to reduce the impact of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Egyptian exports.
She added that in light of the state’s keenness to advance the manufacturing sector and enable private sector investments in the industrial sector in order to increase exports and shift to tradable sectors, the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation is working to coordinate with various international institutions in order to provide technical support, grants, and soft financing that reduce carbon emissions in industry, and promote the green transformation.
She explained that through the Green Sustainable Industries Program (GSI), development partners are providing 271 million euros to reduce pollution in the industrial sector, encourage the use of renewable energy, and develop sustainable industrial practices. She also presented the position of partnership with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, to benefit from the soft financing and grants that the fund makes available to the private sector, in a way that enhances Egypt’s position as a strategic partner of the European Union in the field of green energy, supporting competitiveness and increasing exports in line with national priorities.
On the other hand, Al-Mashat reviewed the green transformation efforts through the national platform of the NOVI program, to mobilize climate investments in the water, food and energy sectors, with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the National Climate Change Strategy 2050 and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
