US President Donald Trump has announced that all medium and heavy trucks imported to the United States of America will undergo 25% customs duties starting from November 1, in a great escalation of his efforts to protect American companies from foreign competition, according to Reuters.
Trump imposes 25% new customs duties on large trucks
Trump stated last month that heavy truck imports will face new customs duties starting from October 1 for national security reasons, saying that the new customs duties aim to protect manufacturers from “unfair external competition”, and that this step will benefit companies such as Peterlet and Kenworth -owned by Bacar, and Vartliner owned by the company Daimler.
Under commercial agreements concluded with Japan and the European Union, the United States agreed to impose customs duties by 15% on light vehicles, but it is not clear whether this percentage will be applied to larger vehicles.
The Trump administration also allowed the producers to deduct the value of American components from customs duties on the light vehicles collected in Canada and Mexico.
The larger vehicles include all types of vehicles, starting with connecting trucks, garbage collection trucks, public utilities trucks, public transport buses, school transport buses, and tractor trucks, as well as semi -trailer trucks, and heavy vehicles designated for professional use.
