The US Supreme Court faces an unprecedented level of scrutiny, with the start of a new judicial cycle that is expected to be among the most tense in its history, amid exceptional escalation in President Donald Trump’s use of his executive powers after returning to the White House.
Since Trump succeeded during his first term in weighting the conservatives within the court by six judges against three, the court has begun to issue articulated rulings that changed the features of the social and political scenes in the United States. In 2022, the previous legal court that guarantees the right to abortion, after about half a century of its establishment through the “Ro against Wade” case, and in July 2024, issued a decision granting Trump – and all The presidents after him – a wide immunity of prosecution of any actions, even if they are possible crimes, as long as they are committed during the performance of official tasks.
Trump and the Supreme Court
Since the beginning of this year, after Trump’s return to power, the court has supported his administration’s position in about 20 cases, most of which relate to a wide use of the executive authority in order to impose his agenda, in a repeated challenge to the provisions of the lower courts.
This coincides with Trump’s escalation in his speech and behaviors, as he seeks to try his political opponents, and he vowed to take strict security measures against those he calls “leftist extremists”, and is preparing to use military forces in cities controlled by democratic governments.
In this tense context, the court is preparing to consider a set of sensitive cases, including the fate of the 1965 voting rights law, the legitimacy of sex surgical operations, state rights to calculate the polling cards sent by mail, and the president’s powers in imposing comprehensive customs policies.
Legal experts believe that this judicial course may determine the future of the democratic system in the country, and law professor Daniel Eps of Washington University in Saint -Lewis commented that this course is unprecedented in its constitutional importance.
