Munich Airport, the second largest airport in Germany, witnessed a turmoil on Thursday night after monitoring unknown aircraft, which temporarily suspended flights and canceled or transferred 17 flights. About 3,000 passengers were damaged before the operations returned on Friday morning. Lufthansa confirmed the resumption of flights early and apologized to the passengers.
Airport procedures and safety priority
The airport explained that the suspension of flights started at 10:18 night local time, stressing that “the safety of travelers is the utmost priority.” He pointed out that there are firm coordination channels between air control, police and airport administration. The affected passengers have been reserved or rescued their trips.
Belgian military base under observation
In parallel, Belgian media reported monitoring of drones over the Esporn military base in the east of the country near the German border. The German city of Doreen has monitored at least 15 drones in the region. The Belgian Ministry of Defense confirmed the investigation in its source, explaining that the base includes Belgian forces only within the defensive structure of NATO.
Rising European fears
These developments are part of a series of similar incidents in Western Europe, amid wide suspicions of Russia’s involvement. In recent weeks, Denmark and other countries have witnessed the flight of near bases and airports, in parallel with the penetration of Russian aircraft of the NATO aircraft in Poland, Romania and Estonia.
European responses and political warnings
European leaders met in Copenhagen this week to enhance air defenses. “From a European perspective, there is only one country that threatens us and it is Russia, and for this we need a strong response.”
