Nigerian police announced on Monday that at least 12 people from a local forest guard unit were killed when gunmen attacked the town of Occi-Audi in the state of Kawra, north of Nigeria, according to Reuters.
The attack sheds light on the exacerbation of the insecurity in the northwest and central Nigeria, where the local armed gangs, known as the bandits, carried out mass killings, kidnappings and raids on rural communities.
Karara police spokesman said that the gunmen stormed a building for the local authorities at about 0600 GMT on Sunday, and fired randomly.
The police added that 4 people were injured in the attack and were receiving treatment in the hospital, and among the dead is one of the local leaders, confirming that the forces and forest security are conducting a joint search for the perpetrators of the attack and “the perpetrators of the attack will be presented to justice.”
The ruler’s office said in a statement that the Nigerian army leadership deployed forces in Kawra to oversee the operations.
In a recent accident recently, at least 18 people were killed after a large rock crashed on an illegal mine in the north of heavy rains, while rescue elements are searching for dozens of missing persons, according to local sources told “AFP”.
The rock was shattered by the mine in Zemfara, near the village of Kaduri, in the Maru region, according to the sources.
“We managed to recover 18 bodies of the mine, and five other survivors were wounded,” said Sani, a worker from the village of Kaduri.
