The Security Council rejects the proposal of Russia and China regarding the UN Security Council rejecting a draft resolution submitted by Moscow and Beijing to postpone the re -imposition of United Nations sanctions on Iran, as the proposal only had the support of only four countries, while nine countries voted against it and two countries abstained from voting. Thus, the “trigger mechanism” will be activated and all the penalties will be returned at midnight GMT.

Iranian threats to suspend nuclear cooperation

Hours before the vote, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqji suggested to stop the agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which allows international inspectors to enter Iranian nuclear sites. He stressed that Tehran will consider its obligations “ended” if it is restored. The agreement that took place in Cairo last month allowed limited inspections after months of tension, especially after the strikes that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities in June.

The upcoming penalties and their dimensions

Sanctions include arms embargo, restriction of nuclear and missile activities, as well as a global freezing of assets and travel restrictions. It will also impose wide restrictions on the Iranian energy sector, which may deepen the economic crisis in the country.

Delicated diplomatic opportunities

European countries tried to make an offer to Iran to postpone the sanctions six months in exchange for practical steps such as allowing full inspection and addressing fears about enriched uranium, but European officials said that Tehran was not ready to make concessions.

Iranian position: Preparing for any scenario

Iranian President Masoud Bouchakian confirmed that his country is “ready for any scenario”, and that it will reformulate its economic and diplomatic policies. Nevertheless, he expressed his hope that diplomacy would prevail. As for Araqji, he accused the United States of practicing “dictates” and confirmed that Tehran submitted proposals for the dialogue that did not find listening ears.

Israeli position and international warnings

On the United Nations platform, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned against allowing Iran to rebuild its nuclear program, noting that joint strikes with the United States in June “removed an existential threat.” He demanded that the penalties be re -imposed immediately.

A new nuclear agreement with Russia

In parallel, Tehran announced the signing of an agreement with Moscow worth $ 25 billion to build four nuclear stations in Hormuzan Governorate, in the south of the country, with a production capacity of 1255 megawatts per station. This comes within broader plans to construct eight nuclear stations, according to what was revealed by the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammadi Islami.

Expected economic repercussions

The return of sanctions will exacerbate the pressure on the Iranian economy, which has been suffering since the withdrawal of former US President Donald Trump from the nuclear agreement in 2018. The value of the local currency has decreased and inflation has increased sharply, and the new situation is likely to deepen its economic and humanitarian crises.
