Sharm El -Sheikh hosts a regional workshop to enhance the environmental capabilities of North African countries

The Ministry of Environment participated in the second workshop for capacity building to enhance the supervision of environmental projects in North Africa, which was hosted by Sharm El Sheikh for two days, organized by the global environment facility in cooperation with the African Wildlife Corporation.

The workshop was attended by Dr. Ali Abu Sunnah, Head of the Environmental Affairs Agency, and the officials of the global environment facility and the African Wildlife Corporation, in addition to the operating points of communication from six countries: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.

Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, stressed that the workshop represents an important step to enhance cooperation with development partners, especially the global environment facility, as a key partner for Egypt in implementing the leading environmental projects, in line with the national strategy and government trends.

She pointed to the importance of enabling communication points and enhancing their capabilities in overseeing projects within the new Qatari participation strategy, to ensure that effective and sustainable results are achieved.

During his speech, Dr. Ali Abu Sunna explained that the workshop provided a platform for exchanging experiences and discussing the challenges and lessons learned, in order to enhance the ability of countries to supervise effective projects, through new support tools, financing mechanisms, and follow -up models designed to keep pace with the project course from design to implementation.

For his part, Rodriguez, director of the global environment facility, said that the role of the operating point of the communication point is very important and directly linked to what we are doing. They bear the responsibility for collecting multiple interests within their countries and formulating ideas and concepts for future facility projects.

The second day of the workshop witnessed a field visit to the village of Al -Ghuraqana, where the participants were briefed on the new houses model, the women’s workshop, and the civil society that was established with the support of the Ministry of Environment through the project to integrate the biological diversity of tourism in Egypt and the Sharm Al -Khadr project.

The attendees expressed their admiration for the integrated model that combines societal empowerment and the preservation of the environment, stressing that such initiatives reflect the importance of cooperation and exchange of experiences to achieve success.

At the end of the events, the participants unanimously agreed on the importance of training and its suitability for the needs of the countries of the region, stressing that strengthening cooperation between the stakeholders is a key to the success of sustainable environmental projects.

They also stressed that this workshop confirms Egypt’s continuous commitment to supporting environmental development efforts in the region, and enhancing institutional capabilities to ensure the maximum national benefit from the global environmental facility projects, to serve the current and future generations.
