The MCU-adjacent Kraven the Hunter takes Sony’s Spider-Man franchise out with a whimper as its reportedly final standalone villain film. Crippled by withering reviews and general superhero fatigue, the Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led film opened to a meager $11 million domestically, pulling in another $15 million worldwide for a global debut of $26 million.
Kraven’s complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), starts him down a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the greatest hunter in the world, but also one of its most feared.
Taylor-Johnson took his role as the iconic Marvel Comics villain seriously, gaining 40 pounds of muscle to pay proper homage to Kraven.
“If you look at that comic book character, I knew instantly that there’s a physicality to this character,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “This guy’s got huge arms, he’s ripped down his stomach. That’s the costume. People want to see that you have embodied that image, and you’ve brought it to life.”
