According to CNN, the 23 -year -old victim, Irina Zarutska, fled her family from Ukraine in 2022 to escape the Russian war, and settled in the United States where she worked in a local restaurant and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. The evening of August 22, while the train was traveling back from her work, a man was sitting in front of her and stabbing her suddenly, and the recording of the surveillance cameras showed.
Police announced that the suspect named Decarlos Brown (34 years old), a shelter man suffering from psychological disorders and has an extended criminal record that includes robbery and theft, was charged with first -degree murder, and a judge ordered that he be subjected to a psychological evaluation for 60 days.

The Brown family confirmed that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and suffered from hallucinations for years, while his sister said he believed that the victim was reading his ideas, which prompted him to attack her. His mother explained that she repeatedly tried to enter a long -term care facility, but to no avail, considering that the health and judicial system was “lethal”.

The incident soon turned into a political issue, as the administration of former President Donald Trump has criticized Charlotte’s authorities, considering that the relaxation of the judicial system allowed the crime. Trump commented that the scenes are very horrific, pledging to counter violent crimes.

Charlotte’s mayor at Lailes offered her condolences to the victim’s family, but also indicated that the case reflects chronic failures in dealing with homelessness and mental illness. Her statements sparked criticism from her opponents, who saw that she focused on the attacker more than the victim.
