On Friday, the Palestinian presidency expressed its deep regret and surprise to the United States’ decision not to grant the Palestinian delegation entry visas to participate in the meetings of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling on Washington to retract the decision it described as contrary to international law.

Violation of international law

The presidency said that the American decision is inconsistent with the United Nations headquarters and international law agreement, especially since Palestine has a member of the international organization. She emphasized that President Mahmoud Abbas had previously sent messages to world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, in which he stressed Palestine’s commitment to peace and international legitimacy.

Concurrent Palestinian positions

Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al -Sheikh, in turn, called on Washington to retract the decision, stressing that he is inconsistent with the rules of international law. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement describing the American move as a “flagrant violation” of the international agreements that guarantee the entry of delegations of countries to participate in the meetings, asking Secretary -General Antonio Guterres, the Security Council and member states to move.

Washington’s position

The US State Department announced that Minister Marco Rubio decided to refuse and cancel visas for Palestinian officials from the PLO and the Palestinian Authority, considering that the move came due to “the failure of the Palestinian party to fulfill its obligations and undermine the prospects for peace.”

Palestinian responses

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the American decision “will not succeed in aborting” the confessions of the international community in the State of Palestine. The Palestinian delegate to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, commented: “We will see how this will apply to our delegation.”

Israeli welcome

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar praised the American decision and considered it a “courageous initiative”, thanking Washington and President Trump for “holding the Palestinian Authority accountable for incitement and rewarding terrorists”, stressing that this step represents new support for Israel in international forums.

The “Axios” news website revealed that the Trump administration is seeking to prevent the Palestinian president from declaring “independence” during his upcoming speech to the General Assembly. The site also indicated that the Israeli minister, Jadaoun Saar, is the one who urged his American counterpart to prevent the issuance of visas to the Palestinian delegation.

The date of the meetings

The General Assembly of the United Nations will take place between September 23 and 28 in New York, amid international anticipation of what the Palestinian President’s speech will carry in light of the new American restrictions.
