A team of American researchers revealed an innovative technique for reshaping the cornea and correcting visual problems, such as short and long eyesight, without the need for surgical intervention, in a scientific development that may constitute a safer and simplified alternative to traditional LASIC surgery.
Researchers Michael Hill of Oxidental College, Brayan Wong of the University of California – Irvin announced the results of their study during the autumn meeting of the American Chemical Society, where they reviewed the details of the technology of “electromechanical formation” (EMR) that is based on adjusting the pH in the corneal tissues through an accurate electrical voltage, allowing the fabric to reshape without cracks or surgical tools.
Initial experiments showed 12 rabbit eye, including 10 with short -sightedness, an improvement in the ability to concentrate visual while maintaining the integrity of the cornea, using platinum -platinum adhesive lenses, such as molds that have reshaped the eye in only one minute. The researchers also pointed to the possibility of taking advantage of the technique to treat some cases of corneal out of chemicals, which currently require corneal cultivation.
The team emphasized that the technology is still in its experimental stages, and that the next stage will include extensive studies on living animals, in preparation for its clinical approval if it is proven effective.
