The activities of the eighth edition of the Nasser bin Hamad season for marine heritage sports, which started last month in an enthusiastic atmosphere in the swimming competition in open waters, are continuing, where fans of the marine heritage are preparing to run one of the oldest and most beautiful traditional competitions, which is the hear competition (oyster extracting with modern equipment), scheduled to be held in the Hair Shetia Naval area with the participation of dozens of amateur and professional divers.
This competition represents a prominent station in the schedule of the season’s activities, as it is held in two halves, bearing the name of His Highness Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Affairs and Youth Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Vice President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Chairman of the General Authority for Sports and Chairman of the Bahraini Olympic Committee.
Every year, the competition attracts a group of divers who seek to show their diving skills and extract pearls that were the profession of parents and grandparents and was linked to Bahrain’s ancient history.
In this context, Mr. Ahmed Rashid Al -Hajri, head of the competition organization, stressed that this event carries a high heritage and cultural value, noting that over the centuries Bahrain was a global center for natural pearl trade, and that diving on pearls formed a basic pillar in the economic and social life of the people of the Kingdom.
Al -Hajri said, “The Irgeion Extract Competition is not just a race in the depth of the sea, but rather a trip to the ancient Bahrain marine memory … through which we seek to revive the heritage of the ancestors, and to introduce new generations to the value of pearls that was a source of pride and livelihood for the people of Bahrain.”
He added: “We are also keen that the participants and the public feel the spirit of originality that distinguishes this craft, and we hope that the competition will contribute to enhancing awareness of the importance of preserving the marine heritage.”
