A scientific study recently published in the Journal of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed that there is a 15% possibility of a violent earthquake in the Cascadia region during the next fifty years, and the percentage may rise to 29% by 2100.
According to Dura, the main researcher in the study, the effect of this event may extend to make entire coastal areas not suitable for living, especially with increased sea level rates increasing and poor infrastructure.
The history of the region vows by danger
The research team was based on an analysis of historical and geological data to estimate the size of the danger, and the records indicate that the last major seismic activity occurred in Cascadia dating back to 1700, when the movement of tectonic sheets led to a huge earthquake ranging between 8.7 and 9.2 on the Richter scale, followed by a tsunami across the Pacific to reach the coast of Japan.
Studies also showed evidence of a giant tsunami for more than 100,000 years, as a wave of 400 meters in the Lanai Island in Hawaii was struck, as a result of a volcanic land collapse. Despite the different context, this historical event is evidence of the possibility of tsunami of this size.
