A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania showed promising results for experimental treatment that uses stem cells to restore insulin production in type 1 diabetes, which may eliminate them in the future from the need for insulin treatment.
According to the newspaper “Philadelphia Ankireer”, 10 out of 12 patients have regained the ability to produce insulin after receiving the treatment of “Zimislisel”, which is developed by Vertes Medicines.
The results of the study, published in the journal “New England Journal of Medicine”, indicated that patients’ bodies are able to regulate sugar levels without external interference.
Treatment depends on the use of stem cells that are programmed to turn into the cells of the Bencramia Islands, capable of secreting insulin and other hormones, and these cells are injected into the body as they go to the liver and start working.
The problem is that patients need immunosuppressive treatment throughout their lives to ensure that their bodies are not destroyed by new cells, as happened with old cells.
However, this approach does not treat the immune cause of the disease, which means that patients will need life -inhibitory medications, which may increase the risk of infection and lead to possible side effects.
The type 1 diabetes is the condition in which the pancreas member stops the production of insulin, and there is no treatment for this disease, and patients can control symptoms through insulin injection.
None of the study participants was subjected to severe blood sugar -decrease attacks within 90 days of treatment, and after a year, 10 of them dispensed with insulin, while two needed only small doses.
Treatment is still in experimental stages, and it is expected that Fertts will start the next stage of clinical trials soon, including patients who have undergone kidney transplantation and have already consumed immunity inhibitors.
If the treatment proves its effectiveness and safety on a wider scale, it may obtain organizational approval by 2026.
