Zahra Murad: 20 minutes was enough for the “prosecution” to recover 30 thousand dinars and reveal the perpetrator

The head of the prosecution and a member of the Artificial Intelligence Team at the Public Prosecution, Zahra Murad, confirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain is steadfastly towards digital transformation, as the Public Prosecution seeks to harness the techniques of artificial intelligence in order to enhance the efficiency of judicial work and combat the created electronic crimes, noting the speedy response of the prosecution in dealing with communications and monitoring and following evidence, as Murad reviewed an electronic fraud case on an elderly woman during which 30 thousand were seized. Dinar, the prosecution managed to recover a large part of it and refer the perpetrator to the court in a record time that did not exceed 20 minutes.

She explained that the Public Prosecution established a specialized prosecutor for electronic crimes in November 2022, which includes a group of members of the prosecution specialists in this field, whose task is to monitor digital evidence and cooperation with the concerned authorities and prepare periodic reports to monitor violations that spread through social media.

She added that the prosecution’s artificial intelligence team works according to an approved ethics document issued by the Attorney General, and is based on the principles of privacy, transparency, justice and the ability to interpret. This document was recently adopted by the Public Parliament in the Cooperation Council countries, which is an important achievement for the Bahraini Prosecution.

Zahra Murad indicated that electronic crimes are rapidly “with a button”, which requires an immediate response. She emphasized that the Public Prosecution deals with reports as soon as they are received, and monitor and track electronic evidence. Murad reviewed a number of realistic issues, including the issue of electronic fraud on an elderly, through which 30 thousand dinars were seized, and the prosecution was able to recover a large part of the amount and refer the perpetrator to the court.

As part of the development efforts, it indicated that the artificial intelligence team held talks with the People’s Republic of China and reviewed its smart systems in the investigation, which helps in analyzing evidence, building investigation plans, and evaluating the status of the accused. She added that the prosecution is currently working on a draft national law regulating the use of artificial intelligence in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Justice, and the Supreme Judicial Council.

Speaking of the most prominent crimes developed during a meeting on Bahrain TV, Zahra Murad indicated the escalation of the use of “Deeb Vic” technology to falsify pictures and audio and video clips, which requires the development of prosecution tools to confront them through artificial intelligence techniques.

On the awareness side, she affirmed that the Public Prosecution comes to publish judicial statements that include the quality of crimes and the procedures taken against them, in addition to holding the annual press conference that reviews statistics related to the created crimes. In 2024, the prosecution launched a “protection” campaign in cooperation with several official bodies, aiming to educate children about the dangers of electronic blackmail.

Zahra Murad concluded the meeting by confirming that the Public Prosecution, as the Secretary, on the public lawsuit, works to ensure public order and protect rights, noting the importance of the role of parents in establishing moral values, and monitoring children to ensure a society free of crime.
