Today, the World Health Organization warned, through an urgent appeal against the repetition of the “Shikonia” virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, and spread globally two decades ago, with light of new cases related to the Indian Ocean region to Europe and other continents.

Diana Alvarez Medical Officer, Diana Alvarez, stated that an estimated (5.6) billion people live in areas in (119) countries at risk of infection with the virus, which can cause high temperature, joint pain and long -term disability.

The current wave began in the early 2025, with the disease outbreaks significantly in the Indian Ocean islands itself, which had previously been injured, including La Rionun, Mautriot, and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

Alvarez explained that what is estimated at a third of the residents of La Rionun has already been wounded, and the virus is currently spreading in countries such as: Madagascar, Somalia, and Kenya, and showed an epidemic transition in southeast Asia, including India, noting that what raises anxiety is the transmission of infection recently into Europe.
