The American special envoy to Syria and the Washington ambassador to Türkiye, Thomas Barak, said that Lebanon is facing an existential threat, unless it moves to address Hezbollah weapons inventories.
Barak warned, in his interview with the National newspaper, that “Lebanon is facing the risk of falling into the grip of regional powers.”
He continued: «We need to move, and I know how frustrated the Lebanese people. This bother me. ”
He pointed out that the countries of the region are ready to help Lebanon if the latter takes action.
It is noteworthy that Barack submitted a proposal last month to the Lebanese authorities that include the disarmament of Hezbollah and economic reforms to help the country get out of a 6 -year financial crisis, which is the worst in modern history.
The American proposal links the assistance in the reconstruction and stopping the occupation army operations with Hezbollah’s disarmament throughout the country.
The Lebanese authorities responded to the proposal, by submitting a document of 7 pages calling for the withdrawal of the complete occupation from the disputed lands, including the Shebaa Farms, and confirms the state’s control of all weapons while pledging to dismantle Hezbollah’s arsenal in southern Lebanon.
