A CBS correspondent on the “X” platform said that US President Donald Trump will later sign an executive order to reduce sanctions on Syria.
This comes after the Trump administration announced the first wave of reduction in the sanctions on May 23, which included the issuance of a public license that allows Americans to enter financial transactions with Syrian government entities, such as the central bank, the state -owned oil company and the Syrian National Airlines.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also revealed the suspension of the “Caesar Law for the Protection of Syrian Civilians” for a period of six months, a law approved by the Republican and Democratic parties with the aim of isolating the previous Bashar al -Assad regime and its supporters.
The United States has tightened sanctions on Syria starting in 2011, due to the Assad regime’s position on the protests against its rule, and the sanctions were expanded in 2020 under the “Caesar Law”. It is expected that Trump will cancel a series of executive orders related to Syria, which dates back decades, including the measures imposed after the outbreak of the civil war that prevented Americans from exporting services to the country.
Trump discussed the mitigation of the sanctions last May in Riyadh with Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara, and this meeting was the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries in 25 years.
The lifting of sanctions paves the way for the reconstruction of the war -destroyed country.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the United States’ involvement and reduction in sanctions as a necessary matter to avoid the collapse of the Syrian government and a return to the civil war.
