The security authorities in Syria continued their operations aimed at pursuing those involved in the crimes that occurred during the past years, as the Ministry of Interior announced today, Saturday, the arrest of Wassim al -Assad, the cousin of the ousted Syrian President, in the Tal Kalakh area near the Lebanese border, as part of a precise security operation. The Ministry stated in its statement that the arrest came in coordination between the General Intelligence Service and the competent authorities, after accurate follow -up and successful lure, stressing that the move comes within the framework of its commitment to combating crime and achieving justice. The detainee is one of the prominent names in the cases of illegal trafficking, and is suspected of being involved in a number of violations committed during the conflict period and the most prominent drug dealers, Captagon traders and smuggling. This step comes in the context of the ongoing security campaign launched by the authorities since last December, which aims to pursue those who describe them as “remnants”, who were involved in violations against civilians during the conflict period. Within the framework of this campaign, the Supreme Committee for National Peace and Justice continues to work in collecting evidence and reviewing the files of the detainees, in preparation for referring it to the competent judicial authorities, while emphasizing the commitment to the principles of legal transparency, as thousands of detainees who have not been convicted were released. Wassim Al -Assad’s arrest was a wide interaction on social media platforms, as many Syrians expressed their support for the steps aimed at consolidating justice and enhancing internal stability.
