The Financial and Legal Committee of the Muharraq Municipal Council recommended that the Hassan Bin Thabit Park be maintained in the 207 complex, and refused to convert it into a permanent location for the central market, before submitting a proposal to invest the temporary market site.
The committee emphasized that the park is the only outlet for the residents of the region, and it constitutes a necessary green space that provides a safe and suitable environment for families and children to practice recreational and social activities, explaining that its recommendation came based on a group of environmental and social justifications, foremost of which is the scarcity of green spaces in the region, where the park serves a large number of residents, and meets their health, psychological and social needs.
She explained that the park plays an important environmental role in improving air quality, reducing the temperature of the atmosphere, as well as enhancing the environmental balance within urban areas, which makes it among environmental necessities in light of urban expansion.
The committee pointed to the positive impact of the park on mental and physical health, especially for the category of children and the elderly, which is reflected in promoting the quality of life in the local community.
The committee indicated that the park is used as a site for social and cultural events, which makes it a vital element in the social fabric, and a fixed corner in the societal life of the neighborhood’s residents.
She stressed that the people have repeatedly expressed their desire to preserve the garden, as they consider it a daily necessity, and not just a temporary entertainment space, noting that there are no close alternatives that provide the same capacity or functional characteristics.
