Several bakeries supported by the World Food Program started working again in the southern Gaza Strip, after limited quantities of flour entered the Strip, in light of the deteriorating humanitarian conditions as a result of the continued acute food crisis.
One of the bakery owners in the southern Gaza Strip explained that quantities of flour recently entered a number of bakeries to resume work after a hiatus of more than two months due to the scarcity of supplies and the disruption of supply chains due to the blockade imposed on the sector. He added that this appeal does not yet include bakeries in northern Gaza, which are still suffering from a complete interruption in the basic materials, foremost of which is the flour.
It is reported that the bakeries supported were contributing to providing bread to citizens at symbolic prices in light of the high prices of basic commodities, which reduced the burden of the humanitarian crisis experienced by thousands of Palestinians, especially from the category of displaced people who have been severely affected since the outbreak of the escalation on the seventh of October 2023.
During a field visit, one of the World Food Program representatives stressed that the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached critical levels that require urgent intervention to ensure the continued flow of food and humanitarian aid, while emphasizing the need for the international community to cooperate and open the crossings permanently to secure the delivery delivery to those they need.
On the sixth of last April, the World Food Program announced that 25 bakeries supported by work due to lack of fuel and flour, in light of the restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid. The program later indicated that it had exhausted its last food stock by the end of April, which exacerbated the extent of the suffering in the sector.
In a related context, the government media office in Gaza announced the entry of 87 aid trucks recently, which is the first batch of more than 80 days ago, explaining that the sector needs at least 500 trucks per day to meet the relief, medical and logistical needs, along with 50 fuel trucks to ensure the continuation of basic services.
Gaza population, which numbered about 2.4 million people, faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, in light of the closure of the crossings and the continued restriction of the entry of aid, which has exacerbated the state of food insecurity, high hunger and malnutrition rates, according to the data of the competent authorities and international humanitarian organizations.
