The Syrian presidency announced, on Saturday, the formation of a “independent body of transitional justice” with the aim of revealing the truth about the violations that took place in the country and holding the officials accountable, in addition to the formation of a “independent national body for missing persons” to reveal the fate of thousands of missing and forcibly disappeared signed by Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara
The presidency stated in a statement that the move comes within the framework of supporting transitional justice as an essential pillar of building the state of law, achieving comprehensive national reconciliation, and ensuring the rights of victims.
The presidency indicated that the independent body of transitional justice will enjoy financial and administrative independence, and will detect grave violations and hold those responsible accountable, in addition to consolidating the principles of non -repetition and promoting national reconciliation.
Abdul Basit Abdul Latif was appointed as head of this body, as he will work to form the work team and put the internal system within 30 days from the date of the announcement.
As for the Independent National Authority for missing persons, it will focus on documenting the cases of missing persons, establishing a national database, and providing legal and humanitarian support to their families.
In New York, the “independent institution concerned with the missing persons in Syria”, which was established by the United Nations in 2023, welcomed this step, as the president of the Foundation, Carla Quenta, expressed its hope to cooperate with the new Syrian Authority, stressing that all missing people in Syria fall under its mandate regardless of their nationality or political affiliation.
