What angered the Mexican authorities, as the country’s president Claudia Shinbom announced that she had filed a lawsuit against the Giant Technology Company Google; Because of its name “Mexico Bay” as “The Gulf of America”.
“Google must adhere to what the US government agreed,” she added in a press conference on Friday, referring to the American executive order that renamed the US -controlled marine areas only, not the entire Gulf.
It also considered that the Trump administration has the right to change the names of its territory, but the seaports under Mexico or Cuba cannot be called Washington or any other party to rename it. “We do not have the right to ask them to change the names of a state, a mountain, or a lake,” she added.
However, Shinbom did not provide details about the lawsuit against Google, confirming that the lawsuit was filed.
Previous messages
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations had previously sent messages to the giant company asking them not to name the Mexican territorial waters in the Gulf of America.
While Google explained in a previous statement that users in the United States will see the water surface in the new name, while the name “Gulf of Mexico” will remain visible to users in Mexico, while the rest of the world will be able to see both names.
This water surface extends across the common borders between the United States and Mexico.
Mexico pushes that the “Gulf of America” should be limited to the part of the Gulf that is located above the continental shelf of the United States.
It is noteworthy that the Gulf of Mexico has this name for more than 400 years, and its use dates back to 1607 and is recognized by the United Nations.
However, Trump was an executive order last January, knowing that this applies only within the United States.
As for Mexico, other countries and international bodies, they are not obligated to recognize the change of name.
