A historical trial in Denmark after the ban on burning the Koran

For the first time since the enactment of a law criminalizing the desecration of religious books, a Danish court begins to prosecute two men on charges of “inappropriate dealing with the Holy Quran”, after they burned the Qur’an publicly at a popular festival on the island of Bernholm in 2024, and broadcast the scene on Facebook.

Destroyed legislation after an Islamic anger

The new law entered into force in December 2023, after the escalation of international tensions and angry protests in Islamic countries, following a series of burnings of the Qur’an in the summer of 2023 in Denmark and Sweden. The law aimed to enhance security and prevent provocations, amid warnings of its impact on freedom of expression.

Penalties reach prison

The law provides for a criminalization, desecration, or burning of religious books, and its violation of a fine or imprisonment up to two years. It has already been presented with a sharp parliamentary debate in Denmark, amid a division between supporters they see protection for community peace, and opponents they consider a restriction of freedom of expression.

Security and diplomatic repercussions

The burning of the Qur’an caused protests in Baghdad, Yemen and other countries, and protesters attacked the embassies, and Denmark raised the level of security alert after threats from extremist groups. The authorities also considered that provocations threaten the country’s national security.

Sweden: a different legal position

Unlike Denmark, the Qur’an was not explicitly banned in Sweden, but it condemned some individual cases such as Rasmos Paladan and Silwan Momica. The latter caused additional tension until his death in February 2025 on the eve of the sentence against him.
