An American doctor warned of the danger of sleep while operating the fan in the heat waves, noting that this may lead to health complications that include severe coughing, chest pain, and painful muscle spasms.

According to the British Daily Mail newspaper, Dr. Nahid Ali confirmed that the operation of ventilation or cooling devices throughout the night imposes hidden pressure on the body, and leads to irritation of the throat and respiratory sewers, in addition to the low blood flow to the muscles, which may cause annoying contractions when waking up.

Dr. Nahid Ali added that people with allergies or asthma are more exposed to these effects, due to the excitement of moving air to dust and dirt molecules that are inhaled during sleep, which increases the severity of respiratory symptoms.

The doctor continued: Many asthma patients wake up while suffering from severe chest distress after spending a whole night and the fan works, explaining that the continuation of air flow leads to drying of the nose and throat, which stimulates the body to produce thick mucus that may cause clogging of the sinuses and sore throat throughout the day.

With regard to the muscles, she indicated that the body’s exposure to cold air for several hours during sleep may lead to a slight decrease in the heat of the muscle tissue, which causes the body to tighten the muscles as a defensive mechanism, which causes tension that may continue even after waking up.

Despite these warnings, the doctor confirmed that the fan can be used without being exposed to all these damages, provided that a number of preventive advice are followed, including:

  • The fan is set on a temporary to stop after the first bedroom (approximately 90 minutes).
  • Direct the fan away from the bed, preferably towards the opposite wall.
  • Keep a cup of water next to the bed to reduce dehydration.
  • Wash bed covers regularly to reduce stuck dust.

These warnings come at a time when the UK is preparing for an unusual free wave at this time of the year, as it is expected that temperatures will reach 30 degrees Celsius in some areas, according to the Meteorological Office.

In addition to high temperatures, health authorities expect very high levels of pollen in southern England and Wales, which doubles the suffering of people with straw fever, and the Aliri Charitable Foundation advises these patients to stay inside the homes as possible, shower after leaving, and changing clothes to avoid the transfer of pollen inside the homes.

In light of these harsh weather conditions, the National Health Services Authority advises to maintain the coldness of the internal places by closing the windows during the day and opening them at night when the temperature is low, as an effective way to adapt to the heat wave without harming health.
